A high-level symposium on “Pro-competitive Policies for a Sustainable Economy” was held at the OECD on 23 January 2023 to help shape the debate on how economic growth and the green transition may be attained in parallel and how the two depend on well-functioning and competitive open markets. This policy discussion focused on how both economic growth and the green transition may be attained in parallel and how they depend on well-functioning and competitive open markets (domestic and international). It aims to underscore that competition policy – or the principles of effective competition – must be at the heart of policy design for a sustainable economic growth and recovery, across innovation, industrial, environmental, energy and trade policies. Thanks to its role shaping the interplay between public interventions and markets, in stimulating innovation and private sector ingenuity, competition policy should be an integral part of a whole-of-government approach to ensure a strong and sustainable economic growth and recovery.
